ELIZABETH by Angela Hill

The new IDEA book is ELIZABETH by Angela Hill. Elizabeth White was first street cast by Angela in 1997 and photographed for VERY, the magazine she co-founded. That VERY cover is also the cover of this new book. Angela’s covers were recognised at the time for their simplicity and honesty; Elizabeth’s was one of the most successful and engaging. A portrait with an enigmatic quality that bears being looked at many, many times.

Angela is, of course, the A of IDEA and a publisher herself. She is also, and always was, a photographer. In 2018, she released SYLVIA, the first in what is now a three-part series of single-subject books that document childhood and adolescence over a period of years. Since publishing SYLVIA, EDITH and THE X-GIRL SHOW, Angela has reasserted herself as a fashion photographer of a distinct quality, shooting campaigns and editorial for Miu Miu, The Gentlewoman and Fantastic Man, Marfa Journal and many more in her own natural, semi-documentary style.

The ELIZABETH book has been made up from scans of magazine tear sheets, vintage prints and damaged negatives. The aesthetic may suit the imagery but this was not a deliberate stylistic choice: much of Angela’s 90s archive has been lost in house moves or destroyed in floods. This is what there is and now, thanks to the book, what there always will be.

Angela’s FASHION ASSISTANT story from VERY No.8 (2000) appears in the new book as a series of scanned pages. The negatives having been long since lost. This story has been the go to reference for designers’ and art directors’ mood boards for years – having first resurfaced on Pinterest. Part of the appeal for Angela in making these books is the opportunity to reclaim her own creative past and reassert why she takes pictures in the manner she does. For her, there is no mood board influence – just the initial impulse.

I love seeing the arc of adolescence. The changes, the emotions, the hiding, the pretence that one is a grown-up. I myself did not want to grow up and be out there on my own in the world; I was scared to leave the security of everything that staying at home gave me. I think, in a way, I am photographing myself through these girls, as I remember so clearly what it felt like at that age. I am photographing memories of emotions.
Angela Hill

There are two short texts in ELIZABETH. A personal postscript from Edith Owen, one of Angela’s daughters and subject of a previous book, and a foreword from Angela’s regular collaborator and publisher of Marfa Journal, Alexandra Gordienko:

People sometimes talk about her photographs as though they simply happened, as if Angela arrived with a camera and the world arranged itself in front of her but I know differently. Anyone who has ever worked with Angela knows this is not quite true. Nobody sends more WhatsApp messages, nor writes longer email subject lines. Nobody thinks harder about a picture than Angela Hill. A picture can begin with a memory and lead to days of discussion about the exact shape of a collar, the colour of a sock or a coffee cup, the temperature on that specific breezy afternoon.
