本書は、デンマーク・コペンハーゲンに位置する「エイティーン・ギャラリー（Eighteen Gallery）」において、2016年11月に開催された作者の個展『Techno Fossil Tumbleweed』を起点とし、アーティストとしての実践とその着想源を探る一冊。

本書には、歴史家、美術評論家、キュレーターであるアンドリアナ・キャンベル（Andrianna Campbell）、ジャーナリストでありライターのニック・パウムガーテン（Nick Paumgarten）、ライターのクヌード・ローマー（Knud Romer）、「エイティーン・ギャラリー」の共同設立者であるイェスパー・エル（Jesper Elg）、ライターのポール・オースター（Paul Auster）、美術史家のポール・バロルスキー（Paul Barolsky）、そして作者自身による新旧のテキストが収められている。

「これまでにタンブルウィードに出会ったことがあるだろうか。乾いた枝が絡み合ってできた、軽やかな巣のように丸くなった植物が風に転がっていく現象である。ニューメキシコのゴーストタウンの道を、その散布体が転がっていく様子を目にした記憶が、ほのかに蘇る。ほとんど何も生えていない地帯で、掠めるように差し込む強い光が、くっきりとした影を落としていた。20代の若者たちの一団が町をよろめくように歩いていたシルエットを覚えている。私たちの進路は、まさにそのタンブルウィードによって塞がれた。腰ほどもある大きな散布体が道に立ちふさがり、まるで動物のようにそこに存在していた。それらは、何らかの移動経路の上にあったのだろう。自然界における有機物の拡散を示す証拠でもあった。ひとつではなく、無数のタンブルウィードが風に運ばれ、19世紀の売春宿の廃屋やいくつかの崩れかけた家々のあいだに入り込んでいたのである。
これら腰の高さほどのタンブルウィードの散乱と、太平洋ゴミベルトに存在する79,000メトリックトンのゴミとを比較してみてほしい。太平洋に浮かぶ島のように広がる、それを構成する1兆8,000億個ものプラスチック片の光景と。」

'Future Techno Fossil Tumbleweed' takes off after Øvlisen’s solo show 'Techno Fossil Tumbleweed' at Eighteen Gallery in November of 2016, and looks into his practice and inspirations as an artist with texts, new and old, by Andrianna Campbell, Nick Paumgarten, Knud Romer, Jesper Elg, Paul Auster, Paul Barolsky and Thomas Øvlisen.

“Have you ever encountered a tumbleweed? It is a dry nest of entangled brush. Faint memories come to mind of such a diaspore, a naturally occurring plant that detaches from its roots, rumbling down a road in a ghost town in New Mexico. Its shadows made distinct by the harsh grazing light of that almost barren landscape. I recall the silhouette of a group of twenty-somethings shambling through town. Our paths blocked by those very tumbleweeds; large disseminules taking up space and standing like animals in the road. They were on some migration path. They were evidence of some natural dispersal of organic matter. Not one tumbleweed, but so many carried on the wind to nestle between the ruined shacks of a nineteenth-century brothel and a few decrepit homes. Compare the scattering of these waist-high tumbleweeds to the 79.000 metric tons of trash in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch: 1.8 trillion pieces of plastic that constitute an island in the Pacific Ocean.”
