パリ発のファッション・カルチャーマガジン『SELF SERVICE』のファッション広告をまとめた作品集。本書は、雑誌創刊25周年を記念し刊行されたアーカイブブック『SELF SERVICE THE ADS』の第6版である。

初版では「1994–2019」と題し、2022年には収録期間を拡張した「1994–2022」版を刊行。最新版となる本書ではさらに4年分を追加し、1994年から2026年まで、32年間にわたるファッション広告を400ページに増やして収録する。

本誌の創刊者兼クリエイティブ・ディレクター、エズラ・ペトロニオ（Ezra Petronio）の発案によって生まれた本書は、長年にわたり同誌を彩ってきた広告を通して、ファッションとそのビジュアル表現の変遷を辿る一冊。過去の版に掲載された広告をすべて収録し、ニコラ・ジェスキエール（Nicolas Ghesquière）時代の「バレンシアガ（Balenciaga）」による見開き広告をはじめ、1990年代の「ラフ・シモンズ（Raf Simons）」、「ヘルムート・ラング（Helmut Lang）」、「プラダ（Prada）」などを掲載する。

さらに本版では、デムナ（Demna）による「バレンシアガ」や「ボッテガ・ヴェネタ（Bottega Veneta）」など、近年の広告も追加。冒頭の広告が、実は後半に登場する広告の参照元となっているという、まるで進化論のような循環とサイクルも楽しむことができる。32年間のファッション広告を一望しながら、その時代ごとのイメージやデザイン、ブランドの表現を振り返ることのできる、充実したビジュアル・アーカイブとなっている。

The return of an IDEA classic / favourite / best seller - SELF SERVICE, THE ADS. The first editions were subtitled 1994–2019. Then in 2022 we had the first expanded edition 1994-2022. The new edition has four more years added and now spans 32 years of ads on 400 pages!

The book really was the best idea we ever had — if only that were true — it was Ezra Petronio of Self Service’s idea. We are just the beneficiaries. Almost any long running fashion magazine could have made this indispensable visual reference of fashion advertising. But they didn’t — Ezra did.

The new edition has all the original ads from the first two editions — including the Nicolas Ghesquière era Balenciaga double page.
