映画に登場する猫を集めてアルファベット順に編纂した「映画の猫百科事典」的作品集。猫はいつの時代も、スクリーンのなかに居場所を見つけてきた。ペットとして、悪役として、あるいは共犯者として登場し、宇宙船で旅をし、人間の服を着て、莫大な遺産を相続し、こぼれた血を舐めて猫と女性が融合した姿へと変身する。猫が演じうる役柄はあまりに幅広く、その出演歴を限るものがあるとすれば、それは監督の想像力だけだろう。

本書には1,000匹を超える猫が収録されている。幾度となく上映されてきた『長靴をはいた猫（原題：Puss in Boots）』や、『オースティン・パワーズ（原題：Austin Powers）』シリーズ（1997年〜、日本での公開は1998年〜）のミスター・ビグルスワース（Mr. Bigglesworth）のように誰もが知る名前から、スクリーンを横切っていく名もなき野良猫や怖がりの猫までが並ぶ。AからZへとページをたどれば、『ティファニーで朝食を（原題：Breakfast at Tiffany's）』（1961年）のホリー・ゴライトリー（Holly Golightly）の茶トラや、『エイリアン（原題：Alien）』シリーズ（1979年〜）のジョーンズ（Jones）といった有名な猫たちを見つけることができる。バステト神の使いや魔女の使い魔に出会い、「アイ・エム・ディー・ビー（IMDb）」データベースに自身のページを持つ実在の猫俳優たちとも対面できる。
