イギリス人フォトグラファー、ピーター・ウォルシュ（Peter J Walsh）の作品集。マンチェスターの伝説的なナイトクラブ「ハシエンダ（The Haçienda）」を記録した写真集『RAVE ONE』に続き、本書では、同クラブで1991年にスタートした伝説的なクィア・ナイト「FLESH」に焦点を当てる。

「FLESH」は、ポール・コンズ（Paul Cons）と故ルーシー・シャー（Lucy Scher）によって立ち上げられ、毎月最終水曜日に開催されたクラブ・ナイトである。エイズ禍の影響が色濃く残る一方、アクティヴィズムが力を増し、エクスタシーとハウス・ミュージックがダンスフロアの垣根を取り払っていった1990年代初頭、マンチェスターのLGBTQ+コミュニティにとって「FLESH」は、政治的かつ必要不可欠な場であると同時に、何より自由に楽しむための場所だった。

作者は、華やかに着飾った人々や、ジェンダーの固定観念を軽やかに打ち壊すパフォーマンスなど、その熱狂に満ちた夜を撮影。本書には、初期「FLESH」の奔放なエネルギーと解放感を捉えた写真の数々が収録されている。

表紙には当時の空気を象徴する一枚を採用、「ファクトリー・レコーズ（Factory Records）」や「ハシエンダ」のアートワークやフライヤーを手がけ、「Johnson/Panas Manchester」がデザインした「FLESH」のロゴをあしらった帯を付属。クラブカルチャーとクィア・コミュニティが交差した、1990年代マンチェスターの熱気を生々しく伝える一冊に仕上げられている。

The new IDEA book is FLESH. Peter J Walsh (Rave One) is back with another window into the windowless world of the Manchester’s fabled nightclub The Haçienda.

This book is different. This is a book of FLESH, the legendary queer night founded in 1991 by Paul Cons and the late Lucy Scher. FLESH promised “serious pleasures for Dykes & Queers...” and, on the last Wednesday of every month, The Haçienda would undergo a transformation, morphing into a ballroom, a bubble bath, a beauty pageant in the buff.

Peter J Walsh shot it all (within reason) and here it is now in dynamite dyke power cover photo and FLESH logo (designed by Johnson/Panas Manchester) obi band. This is a fun book because FLESH was fun; political and necessary but above all fun.

As Paul Cons writes in the introduction:

“So much had changed through the 1980s. The devastation of the AIDS epidemic still hung over our community, but gave way to a generation determined to fight back. Activism had found its voice, ecstasy was dissolving barriers on the dancefloor, and house music provided the soundtrack to a generation that refused to be defined by fear. There were no more apologies and no more hiding away. We were out, we were proud, and we were queer as fuck. If the Section 28 demonstration in Manchester in 1988 revealed the size, strength and energy of the city’s LGBTQ+ community, then three years later FLESH became its clubbing counterpart...”

Walsh’s photos show Manchester’s finest, ecstatic as ever. Dressed up and all the way down again. No holds barred.
