イギリス人フォトグラファー、スカーレット・カルロス・クラーク（Scarlett Carlos Clarke）とナディア・リー・コーエン（Nadia Lee Cohen）による作品集。

本書は、スカーレット・カルロス・クラークによる新刊であり、ナディア・リー・コーエンが主演として登場する。タイトルの「ポダンク」は、英語の稀語「podunk」を日本語で記したものである。アメリカのスラングである、取るに足らない田舎の町、小さく孤立した辺鄙な町を指す言葉である。本書が2026年3月27日に東京・銀座の「ドーバー ストリート マーケット ギンザ（Dover Street Market Ginza）」で発売されたことから、日本語表記が表紙に用いられている。

本書は、作者が8mmカメラ「スーパー8（Super 8）」で撮影した映像から切り出したスチル写真を収録し、128ページで構成される。ナディアは木張りのラウンジに置かれた花柄のソファの上で横たわり、伸びをし、再び身を投げ出す。砂漠の低木が広がる土地では、歩き回り、踏み込み、滑るような足取りで移動する。家の中には子どもたちの姿もあり、彼女と同じ空間に存在しているが、それが自身の子どもなのか、あるいは姉妹なのかは定かではない。そこには、明確な物語は提示されない。以下に引用する作者によるテキストは、本書には収録していないが、その光景を補助的に描写するものである。

雑草と子どもくらいしか、このあたりで育つものはない。いくつかの家は建てられたが、完成する前に工事が止まり、そのまま何年も放置されていた。タイベックに覆われ、まるで包帯を巻いたような状態で佇んでいた。そして、そのスタッコの色みは、たとえピンクであろうと桃色であろうと、常に「サンドストーン」と呼ばれていた。地面があまりに熱いため、犬たちは車の下に身を寄せて日陰をつくる。多くの飼い主と同じように靴を履いていないからである。風が吹くと、周囲を回り込むのではなく、それは内部を通り抜けていった。そして歯のあいだにまで入り込んだ。空はベージュ色に変わり、太陽は瞬きをせずに見つめられる硬貨のようになった。ある少年が野原に自転車を置き去りにすると、タイヤは横に崩れるように溶けていた。翌日そこへ戻ると、それは自分たちよりも古びて見え、まるで掘り起こされたかのようにアルカリの粉をまとっていた。あるとき雨が降り、ミミズが歩道一面を覆ったが、午後には消え去り、痕跡だけが残った。誰もみな、兄弟はパームデールで働いているか、これから働くつもりだと言っていた。

本書はカリフォルニア州ランカスターで撮影された。そこは西モハーヴェ砂漠に位置する広大なアンテロープ・バレーにある町である。本書は桜の季節にあたる時期に、世界でも有数の人口密度をもつ東京・銀座で刊行された。500部限定で出版され、東京を起点にやがて世界各地の読者の手に渡る。

What is that?

The new IDEA book by Scarlett Carlos Clarke and starring Nadia Lee Cohen. The title is ポダンク which is a Japanese translation of an obscure English language word PODUNK. Podunk is an American slang term; the name given to a small, unimportant, isolated and out of the way town. It is here in Japanese because this book will launch in Tokyo at Dover Street Market Ginza on March 27th.

The book comprises 128 pages of stills from a film shot by Scarlett on Super 8. Nadia sprawls, stretches and sprawls again across a floral sofa in a wood-panelled lounge. She stalks and strides and slip-slides across desert scrub land. There are children co-existing in the house with her. They may or may not be her kids or her siblings. There is no clear narrative. This text by Scarlett, separate from the book, paints the scene:

Weeds and kids are just about the only things that grow around here. Some houses were built and then stopped being built before they were finished. They just sat there for years with Tyvek on them like bandages. The stucco color was always called Sandstone even when it was pink or peach. Dogs shade under cars because the ground is so hot and they don't have shoes like most of their owners do. When the wind came it didn’t move around things, it went through them. It filled our teeth. The sky turned beige and the sun became a coin you could stare at without blinking. A boy left his bike in a field and the tires melted sideways. We went back the next day and it looked older than us, powdered with alkali like it had been dug up. One time it rained and worms covered the sidewalks. By afternoon they were gone and the marks stayed. Everybody’s brother worked in Palmdale or said they were going to.

The book was shot in Lancaster, California, a town which sits in the Western Mojave Desert’s rather spacious Antelope Valley. It will launch in the Ginza district of Tokyo during cherry blossom time, one of the more densely populated areas of the planet. Published in an edition of only 500 copies, and offering the twin stars of Carlos Clarke and Cohen, the book will soon be in the hands of fans all around the globe.
