イタリア人製本職人、ジュゼッペ・パガーニ（Giuseppe Pagani）の作品集。2024年2月から4月にかけて、イタリア・フィレンツェの「リッカルディアーナ図書館（Biblioteca Riccardiana）」で開催された展覧会「Otto scudi e un’oca」に伴い刊行された。

本プロジェクトは、18世紀フィレンツェの製本職人であった作者が書物の歴史において果たした役割を、芸術的解釈として提示する。展示では、1758年にフィレンツェを襲った洪水によって制作道具が失われる以前に、作者が書物装飾のために用いていた技法がインスタレーションとして再構成されている。

スタンプに類似するプンツォーニ（punzoni）は、略号や文字、装飾が刻まれた小さく硬質な鋼製の刻印具であり、書物の装丁を装飾するために用いられる。作者は印刷業者「ベルナルド・パペリーニ（Bernardo Paperini）」社と協働し、ヨーロッパ各地の顧客に向けた書物制作において、これらの刻印具を繰り返し使用した。

本書では、フィレンツェでのインスタレーションに再現された10種の菱形刻印を印刷することで、作者が確立した装飾技法を検証する。ハート、葉、仮面、ドングリ、ヤシ、果物籠、ケルビム、花綱のモチーフに加え、動物形および植物文様の輪刻印が、それぞれ一度だけインクを付され、書中で15回押印される。これにより、時間の経過とともに痕跡が徐々に薄れていくプロセスが示唆される。

本書は、出版社「SHIBBOLETH」が刊行する、図書館や研究機関の所蔵・調査結果をアーティストブックの形式で提示するシリーズの一冊である。

A Catalogue of Punch Symbols was published as a corollary book to the exhibition Otto scudi e un’oca, held at the Biblioteca Riccardiana in Florence between 15 February and 18 April 2024. The project offers an artistic interpretation of the role played by the 18th-century Florentine bookbinder Giuseppe Pagani in the history of the book. An installation illustrates the technique developed by Pagani to decorate books before his working tools, the so-called punzoni or punches, were destroyed by the flood that hit Florence in 1758.

Similar to stamps, punzoni are small hard steel rods engraved with an abbreviation, a letter or a decoration, used to embellish book covers. Pagani made repeated use of punches for the volumes he produced together with the printer Bernardo Paperini for clients all over Europe. A Catalogue of Punch Symbols verifies the technique that Pagani developed for the decoration of his books by printing the ten lozenge punches reproduced for the Florence installation. The heart, leaf, mask, acorn, palm, fruit basket, cherub, and garland punches together with the zoomorphic and floral wheel punches are inked only once and impressed fifteen times in the book to intimate the process whereby traces slowly fade away over time.
