本書は、ブルーノ・ムナーリによる名著『Design e Comunicazione Visiva』（1968）の、史上初の英語翻訳版の復刻版にあたる一冊である。ハーバード大学カーペンター・センターで客員教授を務めた後に出版された本書は、50を超えるレッスン、教材、そしてアメリカでの生活を綴った手紙までも取り入れながら、芸術・建築・デザインの未来について語る一冊へと昇華され、デザイン教育と日常生活をつなぐ重要なガイドであり続けている。「生きた書物」として構想された本書は、読者である現在および未来のデザイナーに対し、つい最近の過去のものであれ古い枠組みに囚われず、明日の世界を見て理解するための新たなツールを生み出すことを促している。
