南アフリカ出身として初のフリーランス・フォトグラファーである、アーネスト・コール（Ernest Cole）の作品集。

1967年に「Random House」より初版が刊行された『HOUSE OF BONDAGE』は、20世紀における最も重要な写真集のひとつとして高く評価されており、アパルトヘイトの恐怖を初めて世界に明らかにし、世界中の写真家たちに影響を与えてきた。本書は現代の読者に向けて再版され、近年新たに発見されたネガフィルムの束から抜粋された未発表作品の章を追加することで、この決定的な一冊を現代的文脈において再定義している。

南アフリカ出身の黒人フォトグラファーである作者は、1950年代から1960年代にアパルトヘイト体制の暗部を、しばしば大きな危険を伴いながら撮影した。アパルトヘイトのもとで多数派であった黒人の人々の日常生活に組み込まれた多様な暴力の形態を、鉱山労働者、警察、病院、学校といった場を通して丹念に記録した。1966年、作者は南アフリカを脱出し、ネガフィルムを密かに国外へ持ち出す。翌年、本書は作者自身のテキストと一人称の証言とともに出版された。

本書は、オリジナル版の力強い物語を継承しつつ、作者の生涯と『HOUSE OF BONDAGE』の遺産に新たな視点を加えている。さらに、作者自身が編纂し「Black Ingenuity」と題した章を新たに収録し、アパルトヘイト下で展開された黒人による創造的表現や文化的活動を捉えた未公開写真を紹介する。約55年の時を経て再び世に出た本書は、アパルトヘイト時代を視覚的に強烈に、かつ政治的に鋭く記録したドキュメントとして、いまなお強い力を持ち続けている。

First published in 1967, Ernest Cole’s House of Bondage has been lauded as one of the most significant photobooks of the twentieth century, revealing the horrors of apartheid to the world for the first time and influencing generations of photographers around the globe. Reissued for contemporary audiences, this edition adds a chapter of unpublished work found in a recently resurfaced cache of negatives and recontextualizes this pivotal book for our time.

Cole, a Black South African man, photographed the underbelly of apartheid in the 1950s and ’60s, often at great personal risk. He methodically captured the myriad forms of violence embedded in everyday life for the Black majority under the apartheid system—picturing its miners, its police, its hospitals, its schools. In 1966, Cole fled South Africa and smuggled out his negatives; House of Bondage was published the following year with his writings and first-person account. This edition retains the powerful story of the original while adding new perspectives on Cole’s life and the legacy of House of Bondage. It also features an added chapter—compiled and titled “Black Ingenuity” by Cole—of never-before-seen photographs of Black creative expression and cultural activity taking place under apartheid. Made available again nearly fifty-five years later, House of Bondage remains a visually powerful and politically incisive document of the apartheid era.
