フィンランド人画家、小説家、作家であるトーベ・ヤンソン（Tove Marika Jansson）の作品集。「ムーミン（Moomin）」の原作小説全9作のアートワーク約500点を時系列順に完全収録した一冊。本書はこれまでに2度、全3種の仕様で姿を変えながら再版されてきた同タイトルの新装限定復刊版「コメット（彗星）エディション」である。「ムーミン」シリーズの第2作『ムーミン谷の彗星』（1946年）の刊行80周年を記念して制作された。ソフトカバー、リング製本の仕様でスリップケースに納められ、これまでの緑色のカバーから一新した赤を採用している。

第二次世界大戦終戦間近に作者が手掛けた小説『小さなトロールと大きな洪水 (The Moomins and the Great Flood / 原題：Småtrollen och den stora översvämningen)』（1945年）にて初めて登場したムーミン。以来「ムーミン・シリーズ」として小説やキャラクターは時代を超え世界中で愛されてきた。

本書では文字情報の掲載がなく、作品だけでムーミンのストーリーに登場するキャラクターとその冒険の様子や、ヤンソンの溢れる才能とイラストレーターとしてのキャリアを読み取ることができる。タイトルの『MISCHIEVOUS NATURE』は、登場人物のちょっと変わったいたずら好きな愛くるしい振る舞いと、物語を覆う豊かな自然を描写した世界観を表している。

唯一、例外として記された文章は、スリップケースの裏面に記された、『ムーミン谷の冬』（1957年）からの美しい一節である。
この世界には、夏や秋や春に居場所がないものがたくさんいてね。みんなちょっとだけ恥ずかしがり屋で、少し変わり者で。ある種の夜の動物、他のみんなとはうまく馴染めない人、誰もいると信じていないような生き物とか。みんな、邪魔にならないように一年中こっそりと隠れているんです。そうしてあたりがひっそり静かになって、一面雪で真っ白になり、夜が長くなって、みんなが冬の眠りについたころ、彼らは現れるのですよ。

All of the original Tove Jansson drawings and artwork for the nine Moomin novels in one book, once more. No words - just pictures. Jansson's extraordinary talent as an illustrator, artist and storyteller is obvious in these 500 illustrations, presented in chronological order across 288 pages. On colour pages or not, every one of them is beautiful.

The book's title, Mischievous Nature, relates to the characters' irreverent behaviour and
relationship with the natural world. The new edition has the Comet artwork as its cover on
red textured boards and slipcase, plus red plastic spiral binding.

There remains almost no text at all in the book bar one wonderful Tove Jansson quote from Moominland Midwinter on the reverse of the slipcase:

There are such a lot of things that have no place in Summer and Autumn and Spring. Everything that's a little shy and a little rum. Some kinds of night animals and people that don't fit in with others and that nobody really believes in. They keep out of the way all the year and the when everything's quiet and and white and the nights are long and most people are asleep — then they appear.
