イタリア人アーティストであり映画監督の、フランチェスコ・ヴェッツォーリ（Francesco Vezzoli）による作品集。出版物であると同時に自律した芸術作品としても構想された本書は、2024年4月から10月にかけて、ヴェネツィアの「コッレール美術館（Museo Correr）」で開催され高い評価を得た、作者の展覧会を拡張するものである。ヴィジュアルアーティストであるドナシアン・グロー（Donatien Grau）との対話のもとに展開された本プロジェクトは、同館所蔵の歴史的作品群と、作者自身による近作および新たに制作委嘱された作品とを組み合わせ、古代と感情、そして幻影のあいだに幾重にも重なる対話を生み出した。この展覧会は作者の制作における重要な瞬間を印づけるものであり、美術史、考古学、そして過去が現代の欲望を通じて再構築されうる場としての美術館への関心の深まりを映し出している。

本書は従来の展覧会カタログという形式を超え、真の意味でのアーティストブックとして構想されている。「コッレール博物館」の歴史的なガイドブック、そしてヴェネツィア出身の建築家カルロ・スカルパ（Carlo Scarpa）が思い描いた、感情の振付としての美術館というヴィジョンに着想を得て、本書は美術館ガイドを、学術的な記録であり、虚構のアーカイヴであり、個人的な日記でもある混成体へと変容させる。展覧会を記録するのではなく、本書はその延長となる、記憶、美、哀悼、技巧から構成される、持ち運び可能な美術館として在る。

Conceived as both a publication and an autonomous artwork, MUSEUMS OF TEARS extends Francesco Vezzoli’s acclaimed exhibition presented at Museo Correr, Venice, in 2024. Developed in dialogue with Donatien Grau, the project brought together historical works from the museum alongside recent and newly commissioned works by Vezzoli, creating a layered conversation between antiquity, emotion and illusion. The exhibition marked a significant moment in the artist’s practice, reflecting his growing engagement with art history, archaeology and the museum as a space where the past can be reimagined through contemporary desire.

Published by Lenz Press and moving beyond the conventional exhibition catalogue format, the volume has been conceived as a true artist’s book. Inspired by the historical guidebooks of Museo Correr and by Carlo Scarpa’s vision of the museum as a form of emotional choreography, it transforms the museum guide into a hybrid object: part scholarly document, part fictional archive and part personal diary. Rather than documenting the exhibition, MUSEUMS OF TEARS becomes an extension of it: a portable museum of memory, beauty, mourning and artifice.
