本書は、ベルリンにある実験的グラフィックデザインのスペース「A—Z Presents」における実践やコミュニティ形成の経験を通して、多分野かつ国際的なデザインコミュニティの手と知性によって、オルタナティブなグラフィックデザインの過去・現在・未来を祝福する一冊である。

「オルタナティブ・グラフィックデザインのインデックス」という形式をとる本書は、過去6年間にわたり、多様な背景や世代、キャリアを持つ数多くのグラフィックデザイナーやビジュアルアーティストによって行われてきた幅広い活動を包括的に提示する。また同時に、国際的なデザイナーたちがこの分野の未来をどのように構想しているのかを探ることで、これから先を見据える視点も提示する。

第1部「A—Z」では、「A—Z」によって企画されたプロジェクト、ワークショップ、展覧会、トークなど多岐にわたる活動が、アルファベット順かつ相互参照的な項目として収録されている。ナ・キム（Na Kim）、ニクラウス・トロクスラー（Niklaus Troxler）、ザ・ロディナ（The Rodina）といったデザイナーの寄稿をはじめ、意味を持たない書字「Asemic Writing」、リソグラフ印刷を用いたポスタープロジェクト「Rebellion Riso Posters Collab」、物理空間へ拡張するグラフィックデザイン「Yellow Bench」など、100を超える多様なトピックが含まれる。

第2部「—∞」では、エイプリル・グレイマン（April Greiman）、リチャード・ニーセン（Richard Niessen）、ロレーヌ・フルター（Loraine Furter）を含む36名の国際的なデザイナーが招かれ、グラフィックデザインの未来と、それが「A—Z」のような学際的空間においてどのように実践されうるかを構想している。そこでは、デジタル空間やAIにおける身体性、異種間の関係、異なる文字体系から見た言語など、多様なテーマが扱われる。

豊富な図版を収録した本書は、「A—Z」の創設者でありキュレーターでもあるアンヤ・ルッツによってデザインおよび構想されており、作者は本書を「グラフィックデザインにおけるオルタナティブな思考と実践を継続的に探求するためのメタレベル」と位置づけている。デザイナーのジェイソン・グラント（Jason Grant）による序文と、オランダの出版社「Onomatopee」を主催するフリーク・ローム（Freek Lomme）と作者による対話も収録されている。

On the Edges of Graphic Design from A—Z—∞ celebrates the past, present, and future of alternative Graphic Design through the hands and minds of a multidisciplinary and international design community, their practices, and community-building experiences at A—Z Presents, the Berlin space for experimental Graphic Design.

Assuming the form of an ‘Index for alternative Graphic Design’, the book offers a comprehensive view of the wide range of activities performed by a multitude of graphic designers and visual artists with diverse backgrounds, ages, and career standings over the past six years. It also looks ahead by exploring how a group of international designers envision the future of the discipline of Graphic Design.

The first part, A—Z, features all the projects, workshops, exhibitions, talks, and a wide range of activities and events initiated by A—Z, in alphabetical, cross-referenced entries. It includes contributions from designers such as Na Kim, Niklaus Troxler, and The Rodina, to name just a few, as well as a myriad of related topics, from “Asemic Writing” and “Rebellion Riso Posters Collab” to “Yellow Bench”, and over 100 other entries.

The second part, titled —∞, features 36 international designers, including April Greiman, Richard Niessen, and Loraine Furter, who were invited to envision the future of Graphic Design and how it could be enacted in a transdisciplinary space like A—Z. These contributions range from reflections on the body in digital space and AI, to interspecies relationships, and language viewed through different scripts, among many others.

The richly illustrated publication is designed and conceptualized by A—Z founder and curator Anja Lutz, who sees the book as a “meta-level for the continuous exploration of alternative thinking and practicing graphic design.” The book features an introduction by designer Jason Grant and a conversation between publisher Freek Lomme and Anja Lutz.
