アイスランド出身のデンマーク人アーティスト、オラファー・エリアソン（Olafur Eliasson）による作品集。2023年3月から10月にかけてカタール、ドーハの「カタール国立博物館（National Museum of Qatar / NMoQ）」で開催された展覧会に伴い刊行された一冊であり、同展は作者にとって湾岸諸国で開催する初めての個展であった。

美術館内での展覧とあわせ、カタール北部に位置するアル・タヒラのマングローブ林にほど近い砂漠で、作者のサイトスペシフィックなインスタレーションが多数展開され、そのキャリアを通じて制作されてきた作品群が大きく紹介された。屋外のインスタレーションは、「砂漠における芸術的な実験室」の形式を取った期間限定のパビリオン12点で構成されている。パビリオンの内側で展開された実験の多くは、風、水、太陽光などの自然現象を活用しており、一日の間、あるいは季節の移り変わりとともに、会期中継続して現れてくる状態を作品として表現している。

「カタール国立博物館」では、作者のキャリアにおけるさまざまな時期に制作された多様な作品が展示され、その表現媒体も多岐にわたる。広大な光のインスタレーション、複雑な幾何学モデル、アイスランドの写真作品シリーズ、水彩画、光学機器、そして作者のスタジオと自身の内部を埋め尽くす研究領域を表す広範な地図などを見ることができる。屋内と屋外の2部で構成された展覧会全体を通じたテーマは、作者の幅広い活動において表現される広大な関心に繋がるものである。

The curious desert is the first solo exhibition of Olafur Eliasson’s work in the Gulf region.

The exhibition brings together a dozen new site-specific installations located in the desert, near the Al Thakhira Mangrove in Northern Qatar, and an extensive gallery presentation at the National Museum of Qatar of artworks created over the artist’s career. The outdoor installation consists of twelve temporary pavilions that Eliasson considers to form an artistic laboratory in the desert. Many of the experiments inside the pavilions utilize natural phenomena, such as wind, water, and sunlight, to create artworks that emerge over the course of the day or, as the seasons change, over the duration of the exhibition.

At the National Museum of Qatar, the gallery exhibition features a variety of artworks from different periods of Eliasson’s career and in a wide range of media, including expansive light installations, complex geometric models, photo series from Iceland, watercolours, optical devices and an extensive map of the research areas that occupy the artist and his studio. The themes that run throughout the two-part exhibition relate to the broad interests expressed in Eliasson’s wider practice.
