本書は、出会いの産物として生まれた書籍である。スイス連邦工科大学チューリッヒ校の建築・都市変容講座（Chair of Architecture and Urban Transformation ）、通称 ニューロープ（Newrope）では、教員、学生、コラボレーターが交差する場が設けられ、そこでは世界を構想するための実践が展開されている。それは参加者や観客に向けて、新たな連携のあり方を思い描くきっかけをもたらしている。批判的なデザイン教育の新しい形式が今まさに求められているという認識が、本プロジェクトの即時性を支えている。ニューロープの教育実験の生成過程を記録することにより、本書は、今後この場所の外側で展開される未来の実験を予見する指針となる。その意味で、本書はコラボレーションの手引きではなく、まさにその関係の一部を構成するものとして想定されている。

携帯性が機能性を促進するように、本書は、手元に置き、持ち歩き、頻繁に参照される日常的な作業の相棒として設計され、「投影する（to project）」「経験する（to experience）」「順序立てる（to sequence）」「活性化する（to activate）」という四つの動詞を中心に構成されている。まず、建築および都市変容の分野において確立されてきた専門的実践を文脈的に概観する「Action（アクション）」として。次に、これらの実践を萌芽的なかたちで再現するための思考を促す「Primer（プライマー）」として提示される。後者のセクションでは、ニューロープが今日的な複雑性に向き合う方法論として探求を続ける「コレクティビティ（collectivity）」への思索が展開されている。

ニューロープの「Design in Dialogue Lab（デザイン・イン・ダイアログ・ラボ）」で展開されるこの探求は、小道具やパフォーマティブなモックアップといった具体的な要素を介して、新しいコミュニケーションや関与のかたちを立ち上げようとする試みである。本書を、これら協働的なリハーサルの記録としてだけでなく、これから生まれる実践をともに歩む伴侶として捉えると、その自己完結的な性質が見えてくる。すなわち、静かに共創を促す「道具（prop）」として機能しているのである。

Working on Transformation is the result of encounter. Staged between faculty, students and collaborators at the Chair of Architecture and Urban Transformation at ETH Zurich (otherwise known as NEWROPE), these encounters are performances of world-building, inviting participants and audiences to imagine new ways to choreograph alliance. Recognising the present need for new forms of critical design education underscores the project's immediacy. By documenting the production of NEWROPE’s teaching experiments, the book becomes a guiding companion, anticipating future experiments to be staged outside of this forum. Imagined in this way, it is not an instruction for collaboration but a component part of these very relations. 

Portability catalyses functionality: designed to be held close, carried around and frequently referenced as a habitual working companion. Inside, the narrative is distilled across four chapters, each organised around a verb: ‘to project’, ‘to experience’, ‘to sequence’, and ‘to activate’. These verbs arise twice within each chapter: first as a contextual survey of established disciplinary practices within the field of architecture and urban transformation (as the Action); and second as a speculative invitation to re-enact these practices in nascent forms (as the Primer). These latter sections offer rumination on NEWROPE’s ongoing pursuit of collectivity as a methodology to address the urgent complexities of our times. Tested within NEWROPE’s Design in Dialogue Lab this investigation uses tangible elements such as props and performative mock-ups as instruments to affect new forms of communication and engagement. Understanding the book as not only a narration of these collaborative rehearsals but a companion to future performances, we come to realise its self-fulfilling function—a prop for tacit co-creation.
