本書は、十分に論じられてこなかった時期に焦点を当て、布を用いた3つのシリーズ、独自の造形を示す〈Venetians〉（1972–73）、薄い布の質感を生かした〈Hoarfrosts〉（1974–76）、大判で簡潔な構成の〈Jammers〉（1975–76）に焦点を当てる。シルク、ガーゼ、チーズクロス、ドロップクロス（塗装用シート）など、テキスタイルが持つ表現力に惹かれた作者は、織物が色と光を受け止め、転写イメージを保ち、空気に反応してたわむ性質を実験的に探究した。

収録論考は、1970年代のレイト・モダニズムおよびポスト・ミニマリズムの文脈から、布による作品を位置づけるとともに、舞台美術やダンスの衣装制作を通じて一貫して追究された「芸術と身体の交差」への関心を照らし出す。テキサス州・ヒューストンのメニル・コレクション（The Menil Collection）のシニア・キュレーター、ミシェル・ホワイト（Michelle White）はこの3つのシリーズと関連作を俯瞰的に解説し、コロンビア大学フランク・ガリポリ近現代美術教授、ブランドン・ジョゼフ（Branden Joseph）は当時の文化的・経済的な不安定さとの結びつきを論じる。ドイツ系アメリカ人アーティスト、ニック・マウス（Nick Mauss）は、布を介して生まれる親密さと、過去の実践や関係性、協働のダイナミクスの呼び戻しを検証し、同館メニル・コレクションの出版ディレクター、ジョセフ・N・ニューランド（Joseph N. Newland）は、マース・カニングハム（Merce Cunningham）およびトリシャ・ブラウン（Trisha Brown）の各ダンス・カンパニーのために作者が手がけた衣装と舞台装置を取り上げている。

本書は、作者の生誕100年を記念に刊行され、ロバート・ラウシェンバーグ財団との緊密な協議を経て実現した。ラウシェンバーグの布作品を対象とする美術館による初の包括的展覧会であり、メニル・コレクションが同作家と築いてきた長く深い関係の延長線上に位置づけられる。

Centering on an important but understudied period of Robert Rauschenberg’s work, this book explores the artist’s innovative use of cloth in the 1970s. Fascinated by the expressive potential of textiles, including silk, gauze, cheesecloth, and drop cloths, Rauschenberg experimented with the ability of woven materials to capture color and light, hold printed images, and move in the air.

The catalogue focuses on three series that feature fabric in some way: the idiosyncratic Venetians, 1972­–73, the gauzy Hoarfrosts, 1974–76, and the large, simple Jammers, 1975–76. New scholarly essays contextualize Rauschenberg’s work with cloth in the history of 1970s late modernism and Postminimalism, as well as his career-long interest in the intersection of art and the body through his work in scenography and costumes for dance.

Organized on the occasion of the artist’s 100th birthday and facilitated by close consultation with the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation, this is the first museum survey of Rauschenberg’s fabric works and an extension of the Menil’s long and deep history with the artist.
