フランス人フォトグラファー、アンリ・カルティエ＝ブレッソン（Henri Cartier-Bresson）の作品集。「アンリ・カルティエ＝ブレッソン財団（Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson）」は、刊行から70年を経て、本作を初めて復刊する。

本書は、1955年に美術雑誌社『ヴェルヴ（VERVE）』より出版されたもので、その3年前に刊行された『Images à la Sauvette（The Decisive Moment）』が大きな成功を収めた後に発表された作品集である。収録されているのは、1950〜1955年にかけて、ヨーロッパ10か国でアンリ・カルティエ＝ブレッソンが撮影した114点の写真である。これらの写真は、Harper’s Bazaar、Life、Holiday、Paris Matchといった雑誌取材を受けて撮影されたものであり、戦後の復興途上にあったヨーロッパの姿を視覚的に証言する、独自の記録である。
本書において作者が目指したのは、網羅的な記録を提示することではなく、大きな変化のなかに生きるヨーロッパの人々の姿を、生き生きとしたポートレートとして捉えることだった。

2024年に刊行された『Images à la Sauvette（The Decisive Moment）』の新装版と同様、アンリ・カルティエ＝ブレッソン財団は今回、本書をより実用的で、手に取りやすい小型判として復刊する。初版の構成や空気感を大切に引き継ぎながら、現代の読者に開かれたかたちで再び届けられる。

Published by Verve in 1955, three years after the resounding success of The Decisive Moment, The Europeans brings together 114 photographs taken by Henri Cartier-Bresson between 1950 and 1955 across ten European countries. Taken during assignments for Harper’s Bazaar, Life, Holiday, and Paris Match, these images form a unique visual testimony of post-war Europe in the midst of reconstruction.

With The Europeans Henri Cartier-Bresson does not aim to provide an exhaustive inventory, but rather composes a vibrant portrait of the inhabitants of a continent undergoing profound change.

As with The Decisive Moment in 2024, the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson now offers a reissue of The Europeans in a smaller, more manageable and accessible format, while remaining faithful to the spirit of the original edition.
