スカンジナビア発、年二回刊行のインテリア雑誌『ARK JOURNAL』の第16号。世界中の美しい住居とそこに住む人々の物語は、空間がただ美しい家具やアートを置くこと以上に哲学やパーソナリティの表現であることがわかる。2019年にデンマークの有名インテリア雑誌のエディター、スタイリストを長年勤めるメッテ・バーフォード（Mette Barfod）が創刊した本誌は「私たちの周りの空間、そこに置くオブジェクト、そのオブジェクトの作り手」をテーマにしている。建築、デザイン、アートの相互作用にスカンジナビアの価値観や美学を通してフォーカスする。本号は、3種類の表紙でお届けする。

本号では、建築が土地と深く結びついた、類まれな住まいとクリエイティブな空間の数々を探る。丁寧に修復された歴史的建造物から、風景によって形づくられた現代の住まいまで、職人技、記憶、そしてそこに暮らす人々の物語を語る環境を称える。好奇心と繊細さ、そして周囲の環境への深い敬意に導かれた仕事をする建築家、デザイナーなどクリエイティブ活動を行ってきた人々との間で交わされる、心揺さぶられる綿密な対話とスタジオ訪問、そして卓越した住まいの数々を巡る旅へと我々を誘う。建築、インテリア、アート、そして自然が静かな対話を交わす空間を発見し、暮らすこと、創造すること、そして帰属することの新たな形を明らかにする。

どの住まいも、現在の住人が訪れる前からすでにその存在は始まっており、住人が去った後も続いていく。かつての暮らしの痕跡は部屋のうちに残り、素材は時の証を宿す。そうして建築は、決して完全には定まることのない永続性を帯びる。本号は、この絶え間ない入れ替わりを通して無常というものを考察し、何が受け継がれ、住まうという行為を通して場所がどのように変化していくのかを見つめる。

クリエイティブディレクターでありアーティスト、そして実業家、出版経営者であるラムダン・トゥアミ（Ramdane Touhami）は、ローマの住まいを、歴史的な宮殿「パラッツォ・ボルゲーゼ（Palazzo Borghese）」のうちに見出した。幾世紀にもわたる歴史は、そこに作り上げられたきわめて個人的な世界にとって、豊かな土壌となっている。ブルターニュ、カンペールでは、デザイナーであるロナン・ブルレック（Ronan Bouroullec）の住まいが大西洋岸の環境とともに息づいている。自身の手で撮影した写真は、住まいという概念についての静かな省察となる。キュレーター、美術批評家であるニコラ・トレンブリー（Nicolas Trembley）は、フランス南部にある14世紀の修道院の長い歴史の痕跡をとどめ、一方で建築家であるテーム・クルケラ（Teemu Kurkela）は、フィンランドの歴史ある邸宅「Akola」の改修を通じ、自身の子供時代に深く根ざした住まいへと再び導かれる。

デザイナーのアテナ・カルデロン（Athena Calderone）と建築家のダニエル・シゲルッド（Danielle Siggerud）にとって、トライベッカに建つカルデロンの「トライベッカ・アパートメント（TriBeCa apartment）」で取り組む作業は、建物を丹念に読み解き、雰囲気についての共通の構想を育てることから始まった。国内外でインテリアデザインのブランディングなどを手がける相澤真諭子は、椅子研究の第一人者である織田憲嗣より北海道旭川近郊の自邸を引き継いだ。そこで、歴史への意識が現代建築のうちにいかに息づき続けうるかを考察する。建築家であるミンジェ・キム（Minjae Kim）は、家具とオブジェからなる独自の世界へと我々を誘い、そこでは未解決であることそのものが、固有の居場所を持っている。

スケールはより親密なものと移りゆく。デザイナーでありクリエイティブディレクター、編集者、コレクターであるダン・ゴー（Dung Ngo）、コンセプチュアルアーティストでシェフのレイラ・ゴハ（Laila Gohar）、ファッションデザイナーであるパウラ・ジェルバーゼ（Paula Gerbase）、テーブルウェアやプロダクトデザインを手掛けるナタリア・クリアド（Natalia Criado）による、食卓をめぐる対話へと辿り着く。続くページでは、カトラリーと、心を込めて作られた日用品がもたらす特別な喜びに捧げられたポートフォリオが展開される。本号はまた、容易な定義を拒み続ける建築家、トビア・スカルパ（Tobia Scarpa）の、70年におよぶ類まれな仕事の軌跡を振り返る。

本号では、住まいをはるかに長い連続体の一部として捉える。そこで我々は、最終的な作り手としてではなく、ひとときの管理者として存在するにすぎない。そのページは、建物がすでに生き抜いてきたもの、我々がそこで過ごす間に加えるもの、そして去った後に残るかもしれないものへと、より深いまなざしを向けるよう誘いかける。

Every home begins before its present inhabitants arrive, and will continue after they leave. Previous lives remain in its rooms and materials bear the evidence of time, giving architecture a permanence that is never entirely fixed. Ark Journal Volume XVI considers impermanence through this continual exchange, looking at what is inherited and how a place changes through the act of living in it.

Ramdane Touhami found his Roman home within Palazzo Borghese, where centuries of history offered fertile ground for the deeply personal universe he has created inside. In Brittany, Ronan Bouroullec’s house in Quimper lives with the conditions of the Atlantic coast, photographed by Bouroullec himself as a meditation on what home means to him. Nicolas Trembley’s 14th century priory in the south of France retains the marks of its long existence, while Teemu Kurkela’s renovation of Akola in Finland brings the architect back to a house embedded in his own childhood. For Athena Calderone and Danielle Siggerud, working on Calderone’s TriBeCa apartment began with studying the building closely and developing a shared idea of atmosphere. At Oda House, Mayuko Aizawa considers how historical awareness can remain active within contemporary architecture. Minjae Kim takes us into his idiosyncratic world of furniture and objects, where the unresolved has a place of its own.

The scale becomes more intimate through a conversation about the table between Dung Ngo, Laila Gohar, Paula Gerbase and Natalia Criado, followed by a portfolio devoted to cutlery and the particular pleasure of an everyday object made with care. Volume XVI also looks back on the extraordinary seven decade practice of Tobia Scarpa, whose work resists an easy definition.

Volume XVI considers a home as part of a much longer continuum, one in which we are temporary custodians rather than final authors. Its pages invite closer attention to what a building has already lived through, what we contribute during our time within it and what might remain after we have gone.
