アメリカ人アーティスト、ポール・テック（Paul Thek）の作品集。2007年12月から2008年3月にかけてドイツ、カールスルーエの「カールスルーエ・アート・アンド・メディア・センター（ZKM | Center for Art and Media）」、2008年5月から9月にかけてハンブルクの「Sammlung Falckenberg」で開催された展覧会に伴い刊行された。

他の作家たちによって繰り返し言及され続けることで、決して忘れ去られることがない類のアーティストが存在する。作者もまた、そのような存在のひとりである。その率直なユーモアと、美術界の慣習に対する不遜な姿勢によって高く評価される一方、54歳でAIDS（後天性免疫不全症候群）により早逝したことで広く惜しまれてきた。ヴィト・アコンチ（Vito Acconci）、ブルース・ナウマン（Bruce Nauman）、マイク・ケリー（Mike Kelley）、ジョン・ミラー（John Miller）、ポール・マッカーシー（Paul McCarthy）、キム・ゴードン（Kim Gordon）、マシュー・バーニー（Matthew Barney）といった作家たちが、その功績を称えている。

本作は、三部構成からなる作者のコンペンディウムである。批評家であり研究者のマルギット・ブレーム（Margit Brehm）、アーティストのアクセル・ハイル（Axel Heil）、ロベルト・オルト（Roberto Ort）によるテキストでは、作者の故郷との両義的な関係や、ビートおよびヒッピー世代におけるその特異な位置づけが論じられている。

さらに本書には、作品図版が大きく展開されるパートと、1963年から1988年の没年に至るまでの作品を年代順にたどるセクションが収録されている。

There are some artists who are never forgotten simply because other artists will constantly cite them as examples. Paul Thek (1933-1988) is one such artist. Tales the Tortoise Told Us is a three-part Thek compendium, composed of writing by Margit Brehm, Axel Heil and Roberto Ort (who discuss the artist's ambivalent relationship with his homeland, and Thek's odd place in the Beat and Hippie generation), a large spread of reproductions of Thek works and a chronologically-arranged survey of works from 1963 up to the artist's death in 1988.
